Bandhwari Landfill Leaks: Aravalli Ecosystem at Risk
21 Jun
Summary
- Damaged landfill walls allow toxic waste to spill into Aravalli region.
- Leachate poses a serious threat to vegetation and groundwater.
- Authorities claim no reports, but environmentalists cite prior warnings.

Sections of the boundary wall at the Bandhwari landfill have been found damaged, leading to waste and toxic leachate spilling into the Aravalli region. This poses a significant environmental hazard to the local ecosystem, including vegetation and groundwater. Environmentalists have repeatedly raised concerns, filing affidavits with the National Green Tribunal and alerting the forest department about breaches and the felling of trees. A worker noted the walls have been in disrepair for years.
Despite these persistent warnings, the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram initially stated no breaches were reported but promised an inspection. The district forest officer also committed to an inspection, vowing action against violations. This ongoing issue comes after the Haryana Pollution Control Board recently fined the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram ₹7 crore for violating solid waste management rules at the Bandhwari site.
