Plastic Lawns Spark Environmental Alarm
24 Apr
Summary
- A petition urges a ban on artificial grass production.
- Concerns exist over plastic pollution and harm to wildlife.
- Industry argues carpets create more plastic waste.

A growing concern over the environmental impact of artificial grass has led to calls for its ban in the UK. Jonathan Huggins, a 74-year-old resident, has initiated a petition against the production of plastic turf, deeming it a "looming environmental catastrophe." He expressed worries that the material degrades, releasing plastic fragments that pollute the environment and endanger animals.
Huggins highlighted that the perceived convenience of artificial grass is a misconception, citing its maintenance needs. His concerns are amplified by the World Wildlife Fund, which stated that the rise of fake grass is "not good news for nature." The WWF advises avoiding artificial lawns due to their negative effects on the environment and wildlife.
Conversely, the artificial grass industry defends its product. Lee Symonds of The Artificial Grass Company Norfolk and Suffolk argued that domestic carpets produce more plastic waste than artificial lawns. He pointed out that 500,000 tonnes of end-of-life carpet are produced annually in the UK, with only 2% recycled. Symonds also noted the benefits of artificial grass for elderly individuals seeking low-maintenance garden colour.
