Summary
- A bald eagle was rescued from a Brantford landfill after heavy rains.
- Rescuers described the eagle as resembling a 'smelly drowned rat'.
- The eagle is expected to recover in two to four weeks.
A bald eagle was rescued from the Brantford Landfill Site Scale on Monday after being found soaked and unable to fly. Bylaw officers and landfill staff worked together for approximately 40 minutes to safely retrieve the distressed bird. The eagle was described as resembling a 'smelly drowned rat' due to being thoroughly soaked by heavy rains that had swept through the area.
Rescuers used dirt bikes to herd the bird, which was hopping and evading capture, before eventually covering it with jackets. The eagle was taken to Hillside Kennels Animal Control and then transferred to Hobbitstee Wildlife Refuge in Nanticoke. While X-rays and blood tests were normal, the bird's feathers require time to recover from being affected by a mysterious 'goo' and extensive washing. It is expected to make a full recovery in two to four weeks.
