Freedom, an American bald eagle hatched in 1999 at the Wildlife Sanctuary of Northwest Florida, was released into the wild that same year. His father, Apollo, a 43-year-old eagle who has resided at the sanctuary for over 40 years, serves as a testament to the sanctuary's dedication.
Despite physical limitations preventing normal mating rituals for Apollo and his mate Athena, they produced 10 eagles released into the wild. Apollo, now experiencing arthritis and mobility issues, receives ongoing geriatric care. The sanctuary also houses Winnie and Amelia, other eagles with permanent physical conditions.
Established in 1982, the Wildlife Sanctuary of Northwest Florida cares for thousands of injured and orphaned animals annually. To support its mission, the sanctuary will host the 'Let Freedom Wing' market on July 5, 2026, featuring vendors, food, and animal encounters, excluding the eagles.
Visitors can also explore the newly funded shorebird habitat. The sanctuary relies on community support and fundraisers to continue its vital work in wildlife rehabilitation and conservation.
