29 Jul
Summary
- A baby flammulated owl named Ash was rescued from a Colorado wildfire.
- The owl suffered from smoke inhalation but is recovering at a raptor center.
- Ash is expected to be released back into the wild on August 24.

A young flammulated owl, known as Ash, has been rescued and is recovering after being found during the Aspen Acres fire in Colorado. This smallest species of owl in Colorado, weighing only one ounce, was too young to escape the blaze on its own. Ash was taken to the Raptor Center in Pueblo where he is being treated for smoke inhalation.
Officials at the Raptor Center report that Ash is doing well and is expected to take his first flight within the next couple of weeks. He will remain at the center until his preliminary release date on August 24. This date is chosen before the owls begin their migration to Mexico.
Flammulated owls are distinguished by their fluffy bodies and curved beaks. During wildfire events, it is crucial to contact licensed wildlife rehabilitators for assistance rather than attempting to help injured animals directly. Donating to or volunteering with wildlife rehabilitation facilities is also a key way to support these efforts.
