Firefighters in California successfully rescued a young Great Horned Owl found stranded after an overnight storm. The owlet was discovered near Fry Road and brought to Vacaville Fire Department Station 74 early Thursday morning. Crews promptly reached out to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, which facilitated contact with a Sacramento-area wildlife rescue organization.
While awaiting a wildlife volunteer, the firefighters provided care and comfort to the small owl. They affectionately named it 'Small Fry,' a nod to its size and the road where it was found. Images shared captured the owlet nestled in a towel and on a jean jacket.
The owlet was subsequently transferred to a wildlife rehabilitation center. There, it will undergo evaluation and receive necessary care until it is ready for release back into its natural habitat. Great Horned Owls are common in North America, recognized by their ear tufts and deep calls. Their young hatch covered in down for warmth before developing adult feathers.
