Australia Faces Weather Whiplash: Heatwave to Thunderstorms
2 May
Summary
- Record-breaking May warmth replaced by rain and thunderstorms.
- Temperatures soared 10-14C above average in four states.
- Cold front brings risk of severe storms and flash flooding.

Unseasonably warm conditions that gripped much of Australia in early May have concluded, with a significant cold front ushering in cooler temperatures, rain, and thunderstorms. On Friday, May 2nd, 2026, daytime temperatures in New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, and Tasmania were 10 to 14C above average, with numerous locations setting new records for the warmest May day. Night-time temperatures also saw a similar anomaly, running 8 to 12C above average across several states.
This period of warmth followed Australia's driest April since 2018. However, a cold front originating over the Southern Ocean began its sweep across South Australia on Saturday, May 3rd, 2026, and moved towards Victoria and Tasmania. Forecasters warned of potential severe storms, heavy rainfall, and flash flooding across southeastern Australia throughout the weekend and into the start of the following week. While Sydney is expected to remain mild, Melbourne will experience cooler temperatures and rain for the entire week.
