Auckland Emergency Management is urging residents to "stay alert" as a severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for the upper North Island. This watch is in effect for Auckland from 3pm to 8pm on Friday, coinciding with school pickup and rush hour.

MetService confirmed a front with heavy rain and thunderstorms was expected to move over the northern North Island. Areas including Northland and Waikato are also under the severe thunderstorm watch. The weather system brings the possibility of heavy rain, strong wind gusts up to 100km/h, and a low risk of tornadoes.
New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi has warned that the weather may impact travel over the Auckland Harbour Bridge, with wind gusts potentially reaching 75-85km/h. Drivers are advised to adhere to electronic message boards for any lane closures or speed reductions.
