7 Nov
Summary
- Volunteer group provides water treatment devices to flood-affected villages.
- Specialized filtration units require no electricity and use gravity.
- Campaign includes hardware distribution and hygiene education for sustainability.

In eastern Assam's Charaideo district, the Jeevan Initiative has undertaken a significant project to address water-related issues in seven villages. This volunteer-run organization is providing clean drinking water solutions to around 3,000 villagers through its Paani Campaign.
The initiative equips each family with specially designed water treatment devices, developed by the CSIR-Institute of Minerals and Materials Technology. These gravity-based units require no electricity and can purify water from various sources, effectively removing bacteria and turbidity. The devices are built on Terafil technology and are certified for their ability to provide safe drinking and cooking water.
Beyond hardware, Jeevan Initiative emphasizes behavioral change, with volunteers educating villagers on the operation and maintenance of the devices, as well as on water, hygiene, and healthy living practices. This comprehensive approach aims to foster self-reliance in drinking water and mitigate the spread of waterborne diseases that often follow floods. The organization has a history of similar successful interventions in other flood-affected districts.
