Assam has successfully protected its rhino population, with zero poaching incidents recorded in 2025. This achievement continues the state's excellent conservation efforts and marks a significant milestone in safeguarding its rhinos. In 2022, Assam had previously achieved zero poaching for the first time since 1977.
Operation Falcon, a multi-agency crackdown launched following two poaching incidents in 2024, has been instrumental. This operation has foiled nine poaching attempts and led to the arrest of 42 poachers linked to six poaching gangs in 2024 and 2025. These efforts are vital for protecting the one-horned rhinos, with the majority residing in Kaziranga National Park.
Key to this success are enhanced intelligence sharing, coordinated patrolling, drone and CCTV surveillance, and close monitoring of known poachers. Heightened vigilance during high-risk periods and robust cooperation with local communities have also proven critical in preventing poaching, reinforcing Assam's commitment to wildlife preservation.
