A comprehensive study of 54 Asian oak species has highlighted an alarming conservation gap, revealing that 40 species lack any living representation in botanical gardens globally. This means nearly three-quarters of these trees are at high risk of total extinction should their wild populations vanish. The findings are detailed in a report from The Morton Arboretum and regional partners, focusing on threatened oaks in East and Southeast Asia, a region with the world's highest number of endangered oak species.
Researchers examined species listed as Threatened or Data Deficient across 14 regions in East and Southeast Asia. This situation starkly contrasts with other regions; only 1.1% of studied American oak species and 37% of Mesoamerican oak species were found to be unrepresented in managed collections. Lead author Kate Good emphasized the urgency of increasing the presence of these threatened oaks in managed collections within their native countries to act as crucial backups for genetic diversity and future reintroduction efforts.
Oaks are vital to forest ecosystems, providing soil stability, shaping canopies, and offering food and shelter for wildlife and communities. However, over half of their natural habitat is under pressure from agriculture, commercial logging, climate change, and other human activities. Some species, like Quercus trungkhanhensis, exist in critically low numbers with only two known living trees. Another species, Quercus dilacerata, is known from a single tree outside any protected area, while Quercus dankiaensis has not been seen in the wild since 1934 and may be extinct.
Conservation teams will now use the report to guide urgent fieldwork, focusing on seed collection, propagation, and monitoring of priority species in the wild. Training for local conservation partners on growing and planting these trees is planned, with initial projects targeting Vietnam and expanding surveys in Laos. These efforts aim to prevent further extinctions by focusing conservation actions on species with the greatest need and least protection.
