29 Jul
Summary
- Air quality tests detected no airborne asbestos fibers.

- Asbestos fibers were found in most sand samples from the beach.

Mount Batten beach in Plymouth, Devon, which was closed on July 10, has shown no airborne asbestos. Plymouth City Council confirmed that air quality tests conducted at 24 sites along the peninsula found no evidence of airborne asbestos fibers.
This announcement follows the beach's closure due to the discovery of high levels of asbestos fibers in the sand for a second time. Preliminary sand sampling results indicated that asbestos fibers were present in all but one area of the closed beach.
The UK Health Security Agency has previously stated that all forms of asbestos fibers are hazardous and can cause cancer if inhaled.
