Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) has been awarded over £500,000 to enhance water-efficiency across its Cambridge campus. This significant investment comes from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government as part of the Greater Cambridge Water Efficiency Programme, an initiative designed to alleviate pressure on local water supplies.
Cambridge, frequently noted as the driest city in the UK, faces considerable water stress, exacerbated by climate change and government plans to build 150,000 new homes by 2050. The funding will facilitate the replacement of outdated pipework and the integration of smart sub-meters, alongside innovative smart shower and toilet sensors.
These measures are designed to significantly reduce water consumption, enable prompt leak identification, and foster more water-conscious behavior among ARU's students and staff. The Environment Agency will oversee and monitor the projected water savings from these new installations.
