Aravalli Ecosystem Faces Urgent Protection Call

Environmentalists, conservationists, and government officials convened on Tuesday for a critical stakeholder consultation, advocating for enhanced protection of the Aravalli ecosystem. This meeting, organized by a Supreme Court-appointed High Powered Committee (HPC), aimed to address the definition and scientific delineation of the Aravalli range.

The consultation, chaired by HPC chairperson Kanchan Devi, involved representatives from Haryana, environmental groups, and subject experts. A central debate revolved around the methodology for defining the Aravalli range, with suggestions including GIS mapping and ecological parameters. Conversely, some environmentalists questioned the necessity of redefining an already established ecological identity.

Participants underscored the Aravallis' pivotal role in groundwater recharge, particularly benefiting Gurugram residents. They expressed concern that the hills' degradation has impacted water security and contributed to declining groundwater levels. Measures to prevent habitat fragmentation, protect wildlife corridors, curb illegal mining, and conserve natural water bodies were also emphasized.

Concerns were raised about the rapid loss of green cover in Haryana and increasing construction within the Aravalli region. Citizens voiced strong opposition to proposals perceived as potentially opening the area to further development and mining. The HPC will now evaluate submissions and conduct technical assessments to prepare recommendations for the Supreme Court.
