Summary
- Antarctic tourist flights will soon use fuel from used cooking oil.
- South African company Sasol supplies sustainable aviation fuel.
- Trips to Antarctica cost up to $120,000, now with eco-fuel.
Luxury tourism flights to Antarctica departing from Cape Town will soon be powered by sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) made from used cooking oil. South African firm Sasol is supplying this innovative fuel to White Desert, a high-end operator offering exclusive Antarctic experiences. This move aligns with growing pressure to mitigate the environmental footprint of travel to one of the planet's most pristine regions.
White Desert's unique packages, with prices reaching $120,000, will feature the SAF on their Airbus A340-600 flights starting in November. This sustainable fuel, blended with conventional jet fuel, offers a reduced carbon impact compared to traditional aviation fuel. Sasol plans to significantly ramp up SAF production, aiming for 100 million litres annually by 2030.
