Andhra Pradesh Turns Water Hyacinth into Wealth
27 May
Summary
- Water hyacinth infestation obstructs irrigation and degrades water quality.
- Women's groups will convert weeds into compost and crafts.
- Initiative aims to improve groundwater and support sustainable livelihoods.

The Andhra Pradesh government has initiated a comprehensive mission to rejuvenate water bodies, transforming the invasive water hyacinth into a source of wealth and employment. The weed's unchecked growth has severely impacted irrigation, water quality, and aquatic ecosystems, posing significant challenges to agriculture and public health.
MA&UD Principal Secretary S. Suresh Kumar announced on May 26, 2026, that the state plans a scientific removal of water hyacinth. This approach includes measures to prevent untreated sewage from entering water bodies, addressing root causes of infestation. Multiple government departments are coordinating this effort.
A significant aspect of the mission involves converting the harvested water hyacinth into value-added products. Women's self-help groups will process the biomass into organic compost, fibre products, and handicrafts, thereby generating new income streams and promoting sustainable livelihoods across the state. This initiative is anticipated to boost groundwater recharge, enhance biodiversity, and support irrigation.
