Amritsar Landfill Waste Gone in 6 Months!

Summary
- Amritsar MC to clear 3.67 lakh MT legacy waste.
- Bioremediation project bids are currently under evaluation.
- Waste processing to finish six months after contract award.

The Amritsar Municipal Corporation (MC) has informed the National Green Tribunal (NGT) that the 3.67 lakh metric tonnes of legacy waste at the Chabhal Road landfill will be scientifically processed and cleared within six months of awarding the contract. Bids for the ₹7.12-crore bioremediation project are under evaluation, and no fresh municipal waste is being dumped at the site. All efforts are now focused on remediating the accumulated legacy waste through biomining.
The corporation has floated a request for proposal (RFP) for bioremediation and disposal, with the tender issued on April 13, 2026. Once the contract is awarded, the entire remediation exercise is proposed to be completed within six months. The scope of work includes excavation, biological stabilization, segregation of recoverable materials, and environmentally compliant disposal of processed waste. The NGT is hearing the matter due to concerns about environmental pollution and the management of legacy waste at the Chabhal Road dumpsite, which is one of Amritsar's oldest waste disposal sites.
