Toronto's Allan Gardens Eyes Major Expansion
29 Jul
Summary
- Toronto council is asked to add $9 million to expand Allan Gardens.
- The project aims to more than double the greenhouse size to 32,000 sq ft.
- The expansion includes a botanical garden and food production greenhouses.

Councillor Chris Moise and the Friends of Allan Gardens are advocating for an additional $9 million in city funding to expand the Allan Gardens greenhouse complex. This new request builds upon the $1 million previously committed by the city. The ambitious project aims to transform the existing 16,000-square-foot structure into a facility exceeding 32,000 square feet, positioning it as one of North America's largest conservatories.
The proposed expansion includes the development of a world-class botanical garden and specialized greenhouses dedicated to food production. These enhancements are intended to offer residents a year-round green sanctuary. The funding for the $9 million would reportedly come from development-generated funds within Councillor Moise's ward, not from property taxes. The remaining $40 million of the estimated $50 million total cost is expected to be sourced through private fundraising and philanthropic contributions.
Friends of Allan Gardens has garnered nearly 8,500 signatures on a petition supporting the project. The organization emphasizes connecting the greenhouse wings and maintaining free public access. Plans also involve integrating more native plant species and establishing Indigenous-led programming and youth educational opportunities. City staff are expected to report back to council on the proposal in 2027. Construction is slated to begin next summer, with completion anticipated within eighteen months, pending municipal approvals.
