Alberta Zoos on High Alert for Avian Flu
24 May
Summary
- Avian flu detected in commercial poultry operations east of Edmonton and near Drumheller.
- Calgary Zoo implements foot baths and closes aviary access to protect birds.
- Alberta wildlife center refuses birds with flu symptoms to protect captive animals.
Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) has been detected in Alberta, prompting zoos and wildlife centers to enhance protective measures for their bird populations. Three outbreaks have been confirmed in commercial poultry operations as of May 24, 2026, located east of Edmonton, near Ribstone Creek, and northeast of Drumheller. These detections, occurring during the spring migration, are comparable to previous years but underscore the need for vigilance.
The Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo is taking proactive steps, including guest foot baths at entrances to high-risk areas like the Penguin Plunge and Rainforest Aviary. Walk-in access to the Jihad Shibley Rocky Mountain Aviary has been temporarily closed. The Edmonton Valley Zoo is also monitoring the situation and has implemented protocols to protect its birds, which may include moving them indoors or to mesh-covered outdoor spaces.
The Alberta Birds of Prey Foundation wildlife rehabilitation center in Coaldale is refusing any birds exhibiting avian flu symptoms to prevent potential risk to their captive avian population. Managing director Colin Weir noted that the center receives many calls about avian flu in wild birds, particularly during migratory periods from October to March.
Across Canada, there have been 76 avian flu detections in wildlife as of May 24, 2026, with over two-thirds in Ontario. In Alberta, 12 cases in wild birds, primarily Canada geese, have been recorded in 2026. The province is working with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) on disease response and advises the public to avoid handling wild birds and to report any dead waterfowl or raptors.
