University Seals: Pollution Violations Halt Construction

Haryana's pollution control board has ordered the immediate closure and sealing of an under-construction hostel and mess block at Al-Falah University's Faridabad campus. This action was taken because construction proceeded despite Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) restrictions and without necessary environmental approvals.
Inspections revealed that treated effluents discharged from the university's Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) and Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) exceeded permissible limits for parameters such as BOD, COD, and suspended solids. Furthermore, the university failed to implement basic dust control measures and had not registered on the dust portal, exacerbating air quality concerns.
The university now faces prosecution under various environmental acts, including the Water Act and the Environment Protection Act, 1986. The Haryana State Pollution Control Board (HSPCB) has also initiated action for environmental compensation, highlighting serious compliance gaps and the need for stricter adherence to environmental regulations.
