Nagpur has initiated a pioneering project to scientifically assess the health and risks of approximately 5,000 trees using artificial intelligence and LiDAR technology. This pilot program, inaugurated by Mayor Neeta Thakre, employs a specialized vehicle equipped with advanced scanners and analytical tools to conduct non-invasive evaluations.
The project aims to generate detailed digital twins for every tree. These virtual replicas will contain comprehensive data, including precise GPS locations, species, age, height, trunk dimensions, canopy spread, health status, and structural integrity. This information is crucial for identifying potential hazards and developing targeted maintenance plans.
Officials stated that the technology will rapidly assess tree stability and safety risks. Certified arborists will verify the data, leading to detailed health, risk, and maintenance reports integrated into digital platforms. This data-driven approach promises to enhance public safety by preempting hazardous tree failures and improve urban forestry management.
The initiative is expected to create Nagpur's first comprehensive 3D tree inventory and serve as a scalable model for AI-enabled urban tree management nationwide. If successful, it could be expanded citywide and replicated in other Indian cities.
