AI Data Center Sues for Colorado River Water

In Southern California's Imperial Valley, a large AI data center is embroiled in a legal battle over water resources. The developer, Imperial Valley Computer Manufacturing, has filed a lawsuit seeking 287 million gallons of water from the Colorado River, a critical freshwater source for 40 million people.

The project, slated to be the state's largest AI data center at 330 megawatts, initially pledged not to use Colorado River water. However, the developer is now pursuing this access after local cities rejected proposals for recycled wastewater. The Imperial Irrigation District has also denied the company's water request, facing pushback from concerned communities.

Developer Sebastian Rucci proposed a controversial solution: fallowing nearby farmland to redirect agricultural water to the data center, claiming zero impact on the river's overall allocation. This strategy aims to reallocate water historically used for farming, a notion water experts and advocates deem a significant values question amid increasing scarcity.

While the data center promises substantial economic gains, including construction jobs and long-term economic improvement, local residents and advocacy groups express apprehension. They worry about the cascading effects on agricultural communities and the potential for private deals to bypass public utility control over water rights.

The situation highlights a broader conflict between the burgeoning AI industry's immense resource demands and the preservation of vital water supplies for existing agricultural economies and communities.
