African Swine Fever Confirmed in Lakhimpur
3 Jul
Summary
- African Swine Fever confirmed in Lakhimpur, fourth district affected.
- 1-km infected and 10-km surveillance zones established around epicenters.
- ASF is highly contagious, fatal to pigs, and poses no human health threat.
African Swine Fever (ASF) has now been confirmed in Lakhimpur district, becoming the fourth area in upper Assam to report an outbreak. This follows earlier detections in Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, and Charaideo within the past five weeks. The District Magistrate has issued a prohibitory order, establishing 1-km infected zones and 10-km surveillance zones around two confirmed epicenters.
Movement of live pigs, feed, and pork products into or out of these zones is strictly prohibited until further notice. Veterinary officers are authorized to euthanize infected animals, with carcasses to be disposed of following strict biosecurity protocols. Authorities are urging farmers and traders to remain vigilant.
ASF is a highly contagious and often fatal viral disease that primarily affects pigs, leading to substantial economic losses for farmers. While it poses no threat to human health, containment through culling and strict measures is the only response. The disease was first detected in upper Assam in late May.
