Summary
- Adani seeks approval for a preliminary survey of a proposed hydroelectric project.
- Environmentalists raise concerns over biodiversity and water availability.
- The project is planned in the Arasampattu Reserve Forest area.

Adani Hydro Energy Fourteen Limited has initiated the process for a preliminary survey concerning its proposed Alleri Pumped Storage Hydroelectric Project in Vellore. This multi-crore venture is slated for the Arasampattu Reserve Forest at the foothills of the Jawadhu Hills, an area noted for its diverse flora and fauna.
Environmental organizations have voiced significant opposition, highlighting the presence of endangered species like the Malabar Grey Hornbill and Indian Pangolin. Concerns are also paramount regarding the project's substantial water demand, which would be sourced from the Palar river, potentially impacting local water availability for domestic use and irrigation, especially during drier months.
Forest officials clarified that permission is currently sought only for a preliminary survey, with environmental clearance from the Centre required via the Parivesh portal. The project, designed to generate 1,800 MW, necessitates approximately 833 acres, with over 560 acres falling within forest land.
