Cotswolds Road Project: 42,000 Trees Planted!
6 Mar
Summary
- Over 42,000 native trees planted in Cotswolds road scheme.
- Project includes wildlife crossings and Cotswold stone walls.
- 80,000 more trees are scheduled for planting by developers.

More than 42,000 trees, including native varieties like oaks, holly, and hawthorn, have been planted along the A417 Missing Link road project in Gloucestershire. This extensive planting is part of an effort to replace vegetation removed during the initial stages of the £460m scheme, which began in 2023.
The project is converting a significant stretch of the A417 into a dual carriageway. It also features specialized green crossings and Cotswold stone walls, with specific designs to aid wildlife movement. A particularly large crossing, 730 metres wide, is intended primarily for animals but will include a path for pedestrians and cyclists.
Developers have committed to a five-year maintenance period for all new vegetation to ensure tree survival. This environmental focus comes as construction progresses, with National Highways anticipating the opening of a section of the new road later this year, marking a significant milestone for the infrastructure upgrade.
