A significant £460m project is underway to transform a key stretch of the A417 in Gloucestershire into a dual carriageway. Engineers are employing rock-climbing techniques to scale steep slopes as part of the A417 Missing Link Scheme, designed to improve the connection between Gloucester and Cirencester.
Contractor Kier is navigating substantial engineering hurdles due to the area's high concentration of landslides. The scheme involves excavating deep cuttings through limestone, with ongoing work on the slopes focusing on preventing future weathering and achieving a natural finish. This vital infrastructure upgrade is slated for completion in 2027.
Beyond the road construction, National Highways is actively engaged in environmental regeneration. Approximately 17,000 trees have already been planted, with more planned. This holistic approach aims to preserve and enhance the natural landscape, integrating the new infrastructure seamlessly into its surroundings.
