Derbyshire A38 Faces 20-Month Gas Works Disruption
13 May
Summary
- A 50mph speed limit will be imposed on a section of the A38.
- Gas works on the A5132 bridge will last for 20 months.
- Overnight closures are planned, with full bridge closure in 2026-2027.

Drivers on a section of the A38 in Derbyshire should prepare for significant disruption as a temporary 50mph speed limit is set to be implemented for 20 months. This measure is necessary to facilitate planned gas works on the A5132 Carriers Road bridge, which spans the A38 near Egginton.
The extensive works, managed by National Highways, are scheduled to begin in mid-August and are expected to continue until April 2028. The project involves re-routing and replacing an existing gas line that runs through the bridge structure.
National Highways has outlined a phased approach, affecting both the A5132 bridge and the A38. While the A38 will remain open in both directions during daylight hours, some overnight closures are anticipated. Additionally, toward the conclusion of the scheme, one lane in each direction will be closed to allow work on the A38's central area.
More significantly, the A5132 Carriers Road bridge will experience a complete closure in both directions from September 2026 to July 2027. Despite this closure, pedestrian access will be maintained, and fully signed diversion routes will be established for affected traffic. These renewals are deemed essential for maintaining road safety and infrastructure integrity.
