Nine climate-tech startups are deploying innovative solutions in 10 Indian cities, including Bengaluru, Chennai, and Mumbai, to address urban sustainability. The 'Innovations in Sustainable Urban Transition Program', a joint effort by Social Alpha and the University of Toronto India Foundation (UTIF), supports these ventures.
The startups will introduce innovations in low-carbon construction materials, renewable energy, waste management, water efficiency, and sanitation. Each startup can receive grants of up to ₹35 lakh to facilitate the deployment of their solutions. The program anticipates significant outcomes such as reduced emissions, improved waste diversion, and enhanced water management.
This initiative builds on the program's launch in 2024, which saw eleven startups deploy solutions in 11 cities. Previous successes included measurable outcomes in emissions avoidance, waste diversion, water savings, and air quality improvement. UTIF highlights that the main challenge is bridging the gap between technology and public system adoption, with pilots designed to meet urban local body needs.
