A remarkable discovery was made during a beach clean on the north Cornwall coast when an 80-year-old plastic toy was found. The green lion figure, identified as a playing piece from the 1946 board game 'The Lion and the Mouse,' was unearthed by 14-year-old Leila.
Leila, volunteering for Beach Guardian as part of her Duke of Edinburgh Award, was sorting through litter collected from various beaches. This find represents the oldest item the Beach Guardian group has ever recovered.
Andrew Whittle from Beach Guardian highlighted the significance of such discoveries, noting how they connect the history of plastics to the present day and illustrate their environmental persistence. The lion toy is set to be displayed in the group's beach cleaning museum, which is accumulating a collection of unique items.
