The Environment Agency has finalized a comprehensive £5.2 million improvement program along regional waterways, with projects completed from Ditchford in Northamptonshire to Denver in Norfolk. These enhancements are designed to significantly boost public safety, improve lock resilience, and benefit surrounding natural habitats.
Key upgrades include extensive work at Bedford Lock on the River Great Ouse. Here, downstream gates and the upstream landing stage have been replaced, and the lock chamber wall has been stabilized. These changes are expected to eliminate previous disruptions for boaters, ensuring safer and smoother navigation.
Further enhancements include the installation of solar panels at Titchmarsh Lock on the River Nene in Northamptonshire. This renewable energy system will power the guillotine gate, which had reverted to manual operation due to aging components. Similar mechanical improvements to guillotine gates were also completed at Brampton and Wansford.
