Earth's Tipping Points: 51 Solutions for Rapid Repair

New research from The Earthshot Prize and the University of Exeter has identified 51 solutions capable of initiating rapid and transformative planetary repair within the next five years. This comprehensive study presents a unifying agenda for positive action, countering the prevailing sense that climate and nature crisis solutions are unattainable. Five priority clusters, termed 'Earthshots,' have been pinpointed to guide this crucial work.

The research emphasizes that clean energy, particularly solar and wind power, has already crossed positive tipping points in numerous markets and is essential for phasing out fossil fuels. This transition is seen as the highest-leverage action across all identified Earthshots, as it simultaneously enables electric mobility, efficient heating, and industrial clean-up. However, significant barriers remain, including grid expansion, permitting reforms, and a substantial clean energy investment gap in the Global South, where Africa receives less than two percent of global clean energy investment despite possessing vast solar resources.

Other critical Earthshots include promoting clean cooking and household energy, expanding marine protected areas for self-reinforcing ecosystem recovery, and addressing tropical deforestation driven by global demand for commodities like beef and soy. Legislation such as the EU Deforestation Regulation is noted as a potential catalyst for market-wide shifts. The success of these initiatives hinges on achieving affordability, accessibility, and attractiveness, with the understanding that these five Earthshots are deeply interconnected.
