Over 36 tonnes of banned Thai Mangur fish were destroyed in Nagpur, Maharashtra, after the Fisheries Department uncovered illegal farming operations. The fish were found in 11 ponds located in the Chicholi-Mahadula area of Parshivni taluka.
Utilizing Google mapping and dummy customers for verification, officials, aided by 25 local fishermen, successfully removed and destroyed the massive quantity of the banned carnivorous catfish. This action is part of a broader regional effort, which has resulted in the destruction of approximately 51 tonnes of Thai Mangur over the past three months.
The cultivation of Thai Mangur is prohibited in India due to serious environmental and health concerns, including its carnivorous nature which threatens native aquatic ecosystems and its carcinogenic properties. Despite the ban, its rapid growth, hardiness, and low rearing costs continue to fuel illegal farming and trade.
