$3.5 Billion Climate Initiative Targets Glacier Retreat, Food Security in Asia
28 Sep, 2025
Summary
- ADB approves technical assistance for 'Glaciers to Farms' program
- Initiative mobilizes $3.5 billion to build resilience in glacier-dependent regions
- Program aims to link glacier monitoring with downstream interventions in agriculture, water, and disaster risk
As of September 28th, 2025, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved technical assistance to operationalize the 'Glaciers to Farms' (G2F) regional program, which covers Pakistan and several Central and West Asian countries. This $3.5 billion initiative aims to build resilience in glacier-dependent regions facing intensified climate disaster risks.
The ADB's early support will ensure the G2F program seamlessly transitions into the implementation phase, minimizing delays and strengthening the readiness of proposed projects. The program establishes a full-cycle adaptation framework by linking upstream glacier monitoring with downstream interventions in agriculture, water management, and disaster risk reduction.
Anchored by the ADB and aligned with Green Climate Fund priorities, the G2F program mobilizes public and private finance, including $325 million in concessional support, to address critical gaps in climate finance systems across Central and West Asia. The initiative aims to safeguard the lives, livelihoods, and ecosystems of over 370 million people in the region, which is experiencing rapid and severe climate impacts, such as glacier retreat and erratic water flows.
