18 Feb
Summary
- A 30ft, 6.5 tonne female fin whale washed ashore.
- The whale was found at the entrance to a Spanish holiday marina.
- The cause of death for the vulnerable species remains unknown.

A 30-foot, 6.5-tonne female fin whale was discovered deceased at the entrance to the Real Club Náutico de Valencia, Spain, on Monday. The second-largest cetacean species, fin whales are classified as 'vulnerable' due to historical whaling impacts.
The whale's carcass was carefully removed from the water using a large crane in a complex operation observed by tourists. Veterinarians conducted an initial examination, finding no immediate signs of trauma from vessel collision, a common cause of death for fin whales.
Samples from the whale have been sent for detailed histopathology analysis to determine the exact cause of its demise. The remains were transported to an incineration plant. This discovery highlights the rich biodiversity within the Mediterranean Sea and underscores the importance of ongoing marine research and conservation actions.
