Wales Beach: 150-Year-Old Shoes Emerge from Shipwreck

Volunteers in Wales have made a remarkable discovery, unearthing nearly 450 leather shoes on Ogmore-By-Sea beach. These ancient shoes are believed to have originated from a shipwreck that occurred approximately 150 years ago. The cargo is thought to be from an Italian vessel named 'Frolic,' which met its end near Tusker Rock.

The footwear, resembling styles from a bygone era, was found embedded in sediment and trapped in rocks. This is not the first time such historical artifacts have surfaced on Welsh shores, with similar finds occurring in previous years. The beach cleanup volunteers from the Beach Academy community interest group were astonished by the sheer quantity.

While the primary theory points to the 'Frolic' shipwreck, another less substantiated idea suggests a local link to Bridgend's historical shoemaking industry. Regardless of their precise origin, these shoes offer a tangible connection to maritime history, washing ashore after periods of erosion along the river bank.
