Wolverhampton SEND Support Faces Rising Demand
22 Mar
Summary
- Children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders increased by 73.5%
- New forum aims to improve support for SEND children and parents
- Autism cases now closely follow speech and language needs

Wolverhampton is witnessing a surge in children requiring Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) support, mirroring national trends. A recent report highlighted a 73.5% increase in Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD) diagnoses, alongside a rise in Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs).
To address these growing needs, the SEND Wolves Forum has been established. Parents and carers are calling for improved services and for city leaders to ensure support meets children's specific needs. Discussions around rising ASD cases are sometimes perceived as insensitive, with a call for support to improve at the same rate as diagnoses.
While ASD accounts for 23% of EHCPs, speech, language, and communication remain the highest areas of need. The council notes improvements in early identification and autism pathways. However, challenges persist regarding workforce, budget pressures, and ensuring support for all disabilities, including addressing language barriers for some families.
The forum plans regular meetings to support parents navigating the challenges of caring for neurodivergent children. Organizers stress the importance of a flexible, inclusive approach that acknowledges individual needs and empowers parents as advocates for their children.
