Summary
- School crossing patrols in West Sussex will receive bodycams.
- A trial reduced incidents by half where cameras were used.
- Cameras aim to prevent abuse and encourage safer driving.

School crossing patrol officers in West Sussex will soon be equipped with body-worn cameras. This decision comes after numerous reports of dangerous driving, drivers failing to stop at crossings, and instances of verbal abuse against patrol staff.
A four-week trial conducted earlier this year at various schools in the county proved successful. During the trial, incidents where the cameras were in use were reportedly halved.
Council officials stated that the cameras are intended as a preventative measure against antisocial behavior and to ensure the safety of the crossing patrol staff. Footage captured may be utilized to support police investigations if required.
The introduction of these cameras is also expected to enhance the confidence of families choosing to walk to school, thereby promoting active travel, reducing congestion, and fostering safer communities.
