12 Mar
Summary
- Schools in West Bengal are using firewood due to cooking gas shortages.
- Alternative fuels like firewood are being used to continue midday meals.
- Some schools have reduced menus or served boiled eggs to students.

Cooking gas cylinder shortages have begun to impact the midday meal program across West Bengal. Schools are facing difficulties in preparing meals, leading them to adopt alternative fuels such as firewood. Some institutions have proactively stocked firewood to manage the anticipated scarcity of LPG cylinders.
At Krishnachandrapur High School, firewood was used for meals for approximately 1,500 students due to a lack of gas supply. Similarly, other schools have exhausted their LPG cylinder stock and are seeking immediate solutions from local authorities. Efforts are underway to ensure the continuity of the midday meal scheme.
In response to the crisis, some schools have resorted to serving limited menus, including boiled eggs, or preparing simpler meals like khichdi. School education officials are actively working to restore gas supply and prevent any disruption to the essential midday meal program for students.
