West Bengal Schools Purge 269 'Tainted' Teachers
1 Dec
Summary
- 269 tainted candidates removed from ongoing teacher recruitment.
- Supreme Court terminated 25,753 staff from 2016 recruitment.
- Candidates attempted to reapply using altered personal information.

In a significant move, the West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC) has disqualified 269 candidates from the current recruitment process for 35,726 teacher positions. These individuals were identified as having been part of the flawed 2016 recruitment cycle, a process that led to the termination of 25,753 staff by the Supreme Court. The commission is actively urging the public to report any other dubious candidates who may have slipped through.
These disqualified candidates, including some with physical handicaps, had previously appeared in the 2016 State Level Selection Test (SLST) and Regional Level Selection Test (RLST). Despite being flagged in earlier scam-related lists, some managed to reapply for the ongoing 2nd SLST 2025 cycle. Their admission cards have been cancelled, and some were found to have altered personal information and academic details to bypass initial checks.
Document verification for Classes 11-12 is ongoing until December 4, with discrepancies surfacing as expected due to a lack of in-person verification during the application stage. The WBSSC is seeking public assistance to identify any remaining tainted candidates, promising to take "appropriate action." The commission will release a detailed list of the disqualified candidates in due course, reinforcing its commitment to a clean recruitment process.
