WaterWorks Environmental Learning Lab, formerly Hartselle's water treatment plant, has received a $100,000 grant from the Daniel Foundation of Alabama. This two-year grant will facilitate capital improvements and the expansion of its diverse educational programming for students, teachers, and adults. As of August 15, 2026, the facility is undergoing enhancements to its infrastructure and resources.
The grant is earmarked for constructing an outdoor classroom, acquiring essential equipment like boots, waders, and dip nets for wetland exploration, and establishing a continuous water-quality monitoring system. Microscopes will also be added to the lab's facilities. WaterWorks aims to provide immersive, hands-on science and outdoor experiences utilizing local natural resources.
Originally closed in 1993 due to pollution, the site was transformed into an environmental education facility in 2012. WaterWorks offers a variety of field trips for students from preschool through high school, alongside Scout merit badge programs and adult workshops such as "Friday Night Science." The lab is also planning to launch "WaterWorks Academy" with programs on rain barrels and constructed wetlands.
