Walsall College's New Hub: Former M&S Store Revitalized

Walsall Council's planning committee will decide this week on ambitious plans to convert the former Marks and Spencer department store on Park Street into a new Adult Learning Centre for Walsall College. The building, which has been vacant since 2018, is envisioned as a state-of-the-art facility designed to accommodate up to 750 students and 60 staff.

The proposed transformation includes a modern learning environment on the ground floor with classrooms, an ICT suite, a lecture theatre, and a café. The first floor will feature additional classrooms, study areas, and staff rooms, all accessible via stairs and a lift. This development is part of the council's broader Connected Gateway project.

While planning officers have recommended the proposals for approval, two objections have been raised concerning potential loss of privacy for nearby residents and increased loitering. The final decision rests with the planning committee meeting on Thursday.
