The Madhya Pradesh Higher Education Department has issued a seven-day show-cause notice to VIT University's management following a severe crisis involving student unrest, contamination, and administrative negligence. An inquiry report revealed "extremely unsatisfactory" hostel conditions, including contaminated drinking water and poor food quality, which led to over 35 students contracting jaundice. Students reported facing threats and intimidation for raising concerns, painting a picture of a "fortress of fear."
The situation escalated on November 25 when approximately 4,000 students protested after a student was allegedly assaulted. The demonstration resulted in torched vehicles and vandalism. Investigations also uncovered that 11 campus blocks were operating without essential fire safety permits, significantly endangering the student population.
The government has warned of disciplinary action and unilateral measures if the university fails to provide a satisfactory explanation for these gross violations. The university has since been shut down until December 8, with most students sent home amidst the ongoing fallout from the administrative failures.
