- A new platform, Swalekhan Test, enabled independent exam writing.
- Initiative promotes inclusivity for visually impaired learners nationwide.

Six visually impaired students at Savitribai Phule Pune University's Ranade Institute recently achieved a significant milestone by completing a German language certificate course. This initiative marks the first time such a large group of visually impaired learners has undertaken a foreign language program at the institute.
These students successfully navigated their coursework and final examinations independently, thanks to the Swalekhan Test platform. Developed by Niwant Andh Mukta Vikasalaya, this free resource allowed them to type their answers, overcoming the need for a reader or writer, fostering a strong sense of accomplishment and self-belief.
Behind the scenes, comprehensive support was provided to ensure an inclusive learning environment. Uma Badve conducted a mobility and accessibility workshop for faculty, while Kirti Vaidya ensured all course materials were fully accessible. Ekaansh Foundation sponsored the course fees, removing financial barriers for the aspiring students.
The success of this program is poised to extend beyond Pune. The government is pushing for the expansion of similar training for blind students from kindergarten through postgraduate levels, with the education board approving computer use in exams for visually impaired students. This initiative also supports academic research into inclusive language education methodologies.
