14 Feb
Summary
- Redwood High seniors spelled a homophobic slur with shirts.
- The photo was taken during school hours, following a class shoot.
- District investigation underway with potential suspension for students.

Visalia Unified School District is investigating an incident involving approximately 10 Redwood High School seniors who arranged their shirts to spell out a derogatory homophobic slur. The photo was captured on Thursday during school hours, immediately after a senior class photo session.
School officials have denounced the students' actions as unacceptable and stated that the behavior is not reflective of the district's values. An investigation is being conducted by both the school campus and the district office.
Potential consequences for the involved seniors include suspension and loss of privileges, to be determined based on the district's code of conduct. The incident has caused concern and prompted a community forum by The Source LGBT+ Center.
Ericka Hawkyard of The Source Visalia noted that hate speech negatively impacts student performance, increases feelings of isolation, anxiety, and depression, and can lead to suicidal ideations, with such behaviors now trickling down into schools.
