Virtual Lab Simulates Naval Engineering Training
23 Jul
Summary
- Students can practice complex shipboard systems virtually.
- Platform recreates real-world marine mechatronics systems.
- Enhances naval training, overcoming equipment cost barriers.

In a significant step towards India's defense manufacturing self-reliance, the Centre for System Design (CSD) at NITK Surathkal, in partnership with the Indian Naval Academy (INA), has unveiled the Marine Mechatronics System Design Virtual Lab. This innovative, browser-based platform allows students and researchers to conduct interactive experiments on complex shipboard engineering systems from any location.
The virtual laboratory, inaugurated recently, recreates realistic marine mechatronics systems through advanced simulations. It offers around 50 experiments covering critical areas like ballast control, PLCs, and sensor interfacing, providing a risk-free environment for learning and experimentation. This initiative aims to equip young engineers with practical skills in defence technologies, supporting domestic development of advanced military systems.
Developed under the Ministry of Education's Virtual Labs initiative, the platform addresses limitations in accessing expensive naval equipment and operational vessels. It is designed for students in naval architecture, marine engineering, and related fields, offering crucial training that aligns with international maritime standards.
