UP Gears Up for School Vehicle Safety Checks
30 Mar
Summary
- A statewide checking drive for school vehicles is scheduled from April 1 to 15.
- A new portal will monitor school vehicles, including GPS and CCTV installations.
- Drivers need a valid license, five years' experience, and medical fitness.

Authorities in Uttar Pradesh have mandated strict enforcement of school transport safety regulations, initiating a statewide drive to inspect school vehicles from April 1 to April 15. This action follows recent tragic incidents involving unfit and unregistered school buses, highlighting critical safety lapses. The transport department flagged defective fitness certifications as a primary cause of accidents.
To bolster oversight, the government is rolling out a dedicated school vehicle monitoring portal. Educational institutions across all boards must register complete vehicle, driver, and safety compliance data. This includes details on registration, permits, fitness, insurance, pollution certificates, GPS, and CCTV, alongside driver credentials such as license validity and a minimum of five years' experience.
Failure to comply with these directives will place responsibility on school management and principals. The rules define 'school vehicle' broadly and set a maximum age limit of 15 years for all vehicles, including owned buses, contracted buses, and hired vans. District administrations will coordinate with transport and police departments for effective enforcement, supported by existing district-level and school-level safety committees.
