Uneven School Uniform Support Leaves Parents Scrambling
9 Aug
Summary
- Outfitting a child for school can cost £343 for primary and £442 for secondary
- Only 1 in 4 UK councils offer any help with these expenses
- Experts call for a statutory school clothing grant in England

As the 2025-2026 school year approaches, families across the UK are struggling with the hefty price tag of outfitting their children for the new term. According to the Department of Education, the costs can reach £343 for primary and £442 for secondary students.
For low-income households, these expenses are pushing many towards credit cards, buy now pay later schemes, or doorstep lenders. However, the availability of assistance varies greatly by location. Experts are now calling on the government to standardize support, as only a quarter of UK councils currently offer any help with school uniform costs.
In England, a mere 22 out of 153 local education authorities provide specific uniform aid this year. In contrast, families in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland generally receive more consistent support, although the amounts still vary by region.

Money Wellness, a service that offers free advice to those with money problems, has seen a surge in demand as the new school year begins. Their policy officer Adam Rolfe expressed deep concern, stating: "We're helping more and more families who are falling behind on essential bills after paying for uniforms, stationery and school shoes. This isn't a luxury spend. It's a basic part of education. And the government must step in."
Experts are now advocating for the introduction of a statutory school clothing grant in England, similar to the systems in place across the rest of the UK. They argue that this would ensure no child is disadvantaged simply because of where they live.
