3 Aug
Summary
- New London and South East University Group will be UK's third largest.
- The super-university launches on September 7, merging Greenwich and Kent.
- LASEUG aims to provide a financial foundation amidst sector pressures.

The UK's higher education landscape is set to transform with the upcoming launch of the London and South East University Group (LASEUG) on September 7. This new institution, heralded as the UK's first "super-university," will integrate the Universities of Greenwich and Kent.
With over 50,000 students spread across four campuses in London, Medway, and Kent, LASEUG will immediately rank as the third largest higher education provider in the country. While operating as a unified group, the constituent universities will maintain their distinct academic divisions, names, and identities. Staff will be employed by the overarching LASEUG. Professor Jane Harrington, vice-chancellor of the University of Greenwich and chief executive of LASEUG, expressed confidence in the "new university model" and the "strong senior executive team" guiding a smooth transition.
The merger builds on over two decades of collaboration between Greenwich and Kent, envisioned as a potential "blueprint for others to follow." This development occurs as UK universities face significant financial challenges. The Office for Students has warned of potential insolvency for numerous providers, with a substantial percentage anticipating deficits for the 2025-26 academic year. Reports from MPs highlight a "financial crisis" in the sector, citing job cuts, asset sales, and course closures as consequences that could impact students, staff, local economies, and the UK's global academic standing. King's College London and Cranfield University also announced merger plans for August 2027.
