UK Colleges Face Student Turnaways Due to Funding Cuts
29 Mar
Summary
- Colleges in England will reject thousands of students due to funding cuts.
- Construction training is expected to be severely impacted by reduced funding.
- Government funding per student for technical education has seen a real-terms cut.

Further education colleges across England are preparing to reject thousands of students for the upcoming academic year due to a significant reduction in government funding. The Association of Colleges has voiced strong concerns, highlighting that construction training will be disproportionately affected. This comes after ministers allegedly reneged on prior commitments to boost skills education funding, redirecting resources instead to special needs education (Send).
Despite earlier assurances and a national focus on technical skills, a recent analysis of funding allocations has revealed a real-terms decrease in per-student funding for 16-to-19-year-old technical education. Colleges had previously expanded their intake, expecting increased support, but now face difficult decisions about student admissions for 2026-27. The Department for Education, however, maintains that average funding per student will see a cash increase of 1.66 percent, with an additional £800 million allocated to colleges, arguing this keeps pace with inflation.
