The University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued a directive mandating that Master of Physiotherapy (MPT) and Master of Occupational Therapy (MOT) degrees are no longer to be awarded as general qualifications. This change, based on communication from the National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions (NCAHP), requires degrees to specify their specializations. This new regulation will be effective for admissions made from the 2026-27 academic year onwards.
For degrees awarded prior to the 2026-27 academic year, the earlier UGC notification regarding general degrees will still apply. The UGC has outlined various specializations for these postgraduate courses. MPT specializations include neurosciences, cardio-pulmonary sciences, and sports sciences. MOT specializations encompass rehabilitation, mental health, geriatrics, hand, and oncological sciences. The notification also highlighted other new specified degrees like Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science and Bachelor of Psychology.
